GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 20th July.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
The long run of zero sunspot count ended during the period 5th
- 13th July. Counts of up to 48 were reported each day. The first
spot group of the new sunspot cycle (cycle 22) was reported on 3rd
July; it has two active centres. Individual spots from cycle 22 have
been reported since April 1983, but this is the first time in the
new cycle that a spot group has appeared.
The solar flux rose slightly during the period, from 69 to 72
units, averaging 70 units. The geomagnetic A index was quiet,
averaging 6 units. There was almost no particle input from the solar
wind.
The INDA index for the period 30th June - 6th July was quiet.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
Sporadic E up to blanketing level was recorded daily at
Appleton; on the 10th and 11th it lasted up to 6 hours. On 8th July
there was a sporadic E opening to Scandinavia and the continent on
144MHz, and stations in the east of the U.K. reported many contacts.
The F2 critical frequency averaged 6MHz during daylight hours,
varying between 5.5MHz on 10th July and 6.6MHz on 11th and 12th
July. The darkness hour low averaged 3.1MHz, varying between 2.7 and
3.4MHz; about what might be expected for the present period.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
Not all the data is available from South Uist due to major
equipment failure. There was a small recovery in F2 critical
frequency levels between 4th and 8th July. The daylight levels
averaged 5.4MHz; a level of 6MHz was recorded on the 7th, but
otherwise very little variation.
No sporadic E was reported at South Uist despite the opening
from the east of the U.K. to Scandinavia.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
The sudden increase in solar activity could well continue as
the new spot group rotates over the sun's east limb and comes into
view this week. There is likely to be some flare activity, although
the overall effects are not likely to be spectacular.
The geomagnetic field is expected to remain quiet or just
unsettled. Sporadic E could still be present on most days in the
south.
Ionospheric M.U.F. levels in the south could reach 21MHz on
good days, but only around 15MHz on ordinary ones. Conditions in
general are expected to improve towards the end of the week. In the
north not much change is expected, little or no sporadic E is
expected, and M.U.F. levels at best may only reach 18MHz. The level
is more likely to be around 15 or 16MHz.
The Delta Aquarids meteor shower is due to begin on 27th July
and peak on the 29th.
